Major Alwyn Holberton Square was awarded the Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry with his battery in action, under heavy barrage fire. When the whole of a detachment was killed or wounded by a shell he was the first to help the wounded to safety, although badly shaken himself, and subsequently he visited all his detachments and encouraged the men, severe shell fire continuing throughout", Edinburgh Gazette, November 11th, 1918.
Major Square was a Temporary Captain and an acting Major during WWI, he served as a Major throughout WWII and retired from service in 1948 after exceeding the age limit.
